Ferdinand Porsche founded the company that bears his name in Germany in 1931, and one of its first projects was to create an inexpensive mass-produced car for the regular folk. The result was the original Volkswagen – AKA, the Beetle – that would pass on its rear-engine layout to a number of early Porsches, including the iconic 911.
But if the evolution of the VW Bug into the Porsche 911 was a big change, Mr. Porsche might be even more surprised at the brand’s top offerings nowadays: High-performance SUVs that retain the classic Porsche driving experience and add rewarding off-road capability.
The starting point was the 2003 Porsche Cayenne, a midsized two-row masterpiece of modern engineering. Since then, the Cayenne family has grown to include a strong lineup of choices that include used Porsche SUVs with both pure gasoline and hybrid power – and with either traditional sport-utility styling or a sleek, coupe-like silhouette.
Available with several different engines over the years, the standard Cayenne can deliver 348hp from a turbocharged V6 for sprinting to 60 mph in as few as 5.4 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph. Off the pavement, used Cayennes can ford more than 20 inches of water with up to 9.3 inches of ground clearance with its adaptive air suspension.
The Cayenne S raises the bar with a 468-hp bi-turbocharged V8, and both the Cayenne and Cayenne S are available with streamlined coupe-style bodies for enhanced visual appeal. The coupe-only Cayenne Turbo GT takes exhilaration to the next level with its own bi-turbocharged V8 that can serve up 650 hp, lower 0-60 sprint times to 3.1 seconds, and reach a top track speed of 189 mph.
High-performance hybrid and plug-in models add robust electric motors for shocking improvements in performance from town to the trail. By 2023, used versions of the Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid Coupe could showcase 729 hp with nearly instant access to 700 lb-ft of torque.
To enjoy the unparalleled benefits of a used Porsche SUV with nimbler dimensions, there’s the Porsche Macan. Just don’t let its compact footprint fool you. Used Macan’s can supply big-time power and premium appointments just like the Cayenne. The Macan GTS, for instance, can be configured with a twin-turbocharged V6 good for 434 hp.
Another benefit of both the Cayenne and the Macan is that they can pamper their owners with an incredible range of deluxe details such as:
Porsche’s prime claim to fame, however, is its powerful portfolio of premium performance cars. Remember, this is a company that sells not only street-legal racecars but also actual turnkey racecars for clients – and racing series – from around the world.
The Porsche 911 leads the pack with unmistakable road authority in a wide variety of variants built around three basic body styles:
For a classic 911 look, you can opt for a muscular coupe that can be dressed to thrill with aggressive – and fully functional – aero upgrades, lightweight wheels, rear- or all-wheel drive, and replica racing liveries. Among the model highlights are used Porsches such as the trail-ready 911 Dakar, the track-ready 911 S/T, and the race-ready GT3 with a 3-second 0-60 time, an automatically adjusting rear wing/front diffuser, active suspension management, and more.
Open-air driving comes into play when you purchase used Porsche 911 cabriolets and Targa models. The former are true convertible with premium power-retractable soft tops that you can open with the press of a button. With 911 Targa models, you can enjoy a hard center roof panel that delivers improved all-weather comfort but retracts for sky-friendly driving in nicer conditions.
The Porsche Panamera is the brand’s flagship sport sedan, although it’s technically a liftback: Instead of a traditional trunk, the Panamera has a rear liftgate for a dash of premium practicality. Lavishly equipped cabins with room for up to five are a further hallmark of the Panamera family, which features gas and gas-hybrid powertrains for your preferred route to energetic driving. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Executive is a top choice with a top speed of 196 mph.
First launched as separate Boxster and Cayman models, the Porsche 718 duo was originally engineered as an entry point to the brand’s family of racing-inspired rides. Today, though, the Boxster convertible and Cayman coupe are all grown up with their own unique approach to enthusiast-approved driving. A key here is their mid-engined layout that plants high-strength horizontally opposed engines between the rear wheels and the passenger compartment for fantastically balanced handling. We especially like the RS editions that can serve up the kind of track-capable excitement you expect from luxury used Porsches.
In addition, Porsche helped pioneer all-electric performance machines with the gas-free Porsche Taycan. The Taycan is available in sedan and wagon body styles, with the latter known as the Taycan Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo. Each one blends a pure Porsche ownership experience with an extensive all-electric driving range and quick-charging capability. As a result, some Taycans can take as little as 2.6 seconds to reach 60 mph, and some can enable an EPA-rated 246 miles of EV driving range on a single charge.
